The Ethics Centre is committed to provide a resource and service to the individual and society in rational reflection, objective analysis and sound ethical knowledge so as to contribute effectively to the well-being of persons and society.

MISSION STATEMENT
The University of Sudbury Ethics Centre was established to provide information, resource persons, consultation and research for the people of Northern Ontario in the fields of Ethics, particularly Bioethics, Business Ethics, Environmental Ethics and Aboriginal Values.

OBJECTIVES
The original "Ethics Project" had five objectives:

  • To develop a resource centre for accessing the best available information in Ethics, particularly in the fields of Bioethics, Business Ethics, Environmental Ethics and Aboriginal Values;
  • To promote dialogue among three different social groups, communities, and institutions of the region;
  • To provide an opportunity for researchers, practitioners and interested individuals to become involved in
    a) a systematic reflection on important moral issues, and
    b) practical research in response to the community’s needs;
  • To create a network for communication among people of different disciplines and those engaged in ethical reflection and research;
  • To educate the public at large about ethical and social values.

The activities of the Centre fall into four main categories:

Information
Provide access to accurate information by means of a network of resource persons and the Honorable Jean Desmarais Information Centre.

Research
Create a locus for interdisciplinary research on contemporary issues to respond to the community’s needs.
Education
Participate in the creation of courses or study sessions in ethics and educate the general public by organizing lectures, conferences, workshops and media events.
Action
Become a meeting place for reflection and action by offering consulting services and expert analysis of issues, by taking part in public debates, and by disseminating the results of inquiries and research.

BURSARIES
The Ethics Centre also offers a substantial number of bursaries. In the context of our generation’s crisis in values, the Ethics Centre hopes to encourage students to concentrate more on the study of ethical issues. These bursaries are available thanks to the generosity of donors, such as the Baxter and Alma Ricard Foundation and the firm of Lacroix, Forest and Del Frate. For more information, please contact the Office of the Registrar, University of Sudbury.

THE LOGO
The logo seeks to express the nature, context and purpose of ethics. Its aim is to demonstrate the ambiguity of the human condition, the necessity for reflection and the idea of movement and creativity in searching for an ethical position. The colour green was chosen to symbolize serenity in the face of difficult ethical problems as well as hope of finding the way to personal and collective fulfilment.

FOUNDATION
The Ethics Foundation was established by generous benefactors who believed very strongly in its mission. To continue and develop its activities, the Ethics Centre needs your financial support. You can send your donations to the Foundation at the address below.
