Greetings from the President

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the University of Sudbury's website! You may be a first-year student looking for basic information about us, or a returning student seeking up-to-date news about activities or events. Or you may be "visiting" us virtually from further away. Whatever your situation - welcome, and I hope that you will find this site helpful and informative.

The University of Sudbury is a great place, which for many a student becomes a home away from home. Our small size is actually a strength and an advantage. Our professors and support staff are highly dedicated to all students and to the delivery of a high-quality undergraduate education. With our smaller size, we are well equipped to attend to a wide range of student needs - often on an individual basis. Over the years, our students have appreciated this "warm climate". And, since my own arrival here as President (in August, 2004), I have done my best to be accessible to all - within reason, of course!

To the ancient Greeks, self-centered pride was a moral flaw that inevitably led to ruin. But at the University of Sudbury, we make a strong case for "justifiable pride." We are proud of our historical role in delivering bilingual education in northern Ontario - since 1913. And we are justifiably proud of our Departments of Philosophy, Religious Studies, Native Studies, Folklore-Ethnology - as well as of "the new kid on the block": Communication.

Taken together, our 100% liberal arts, humanities focus is our specialty. We promote human values and the human spirit from a variety of cultural perspectives. So - whether you take only one course with us, or whether you do a major or even a joint major at the University of Sudbury, you can be sure of some very important things for your overall university experience:

  1. you will be introduced to the deepest questions of human existence and spirituality;

  2. you will learn critical thinking skills which will serve you well throughout your life, regardless of your career choice;

  3. every credit that you earn with our courses counts towards your Laurentian University degree;

  4. any of our students who find themselves in financial need will always have a fair chance.  Our Bursaries Program is designed to give fair and equal access to our courses for all, regardless of means. Please consult the appropriate sections of this site for more details.

Finally, a small suggestion to students. Please consider the University of Sudbury as your designated college of affiliation.  Why?

  1. Upon graduation, you will officially become an alumna/alumnus of the University of Sudbury, and your continued association with us will be valuable;

  2. your University of Sudbury affiliation will entitle you to special privileges for various campus activities;

  3. the University of Sudbury Student Council will receive some funding from your tuition fees in support of its activities throughout the school year. That, too, will significantly enhance your university experience at University of Sudbury!

I have personally been deeply enriched by my experience at the University of Sudbury, and I look forward to meeting each and every one of you on this beautiful campus, where you can share our special feeling and identity on top of the hill.

I guarantee that the University of Sudbury will enhance your university experience - some of the most precious years of your life.  At the University of Sudbury, the Spirit will move you.

With my best wishes for your academic success,

Andrii Krawchuk, Ph.D.
President and Vice-Chancellor
